How the Private-Sector Labour Law Works in the UAE

If you work for a private company in Dubai, one federal law sets the ground rules for your job — whoever you are and whatever you do. It covers all businesses, employees and employers in the private sector, and it applies to everyone working in the UAE, whether UAE nationals or expatriates. Here is what it means for you, in plain terms.

Official source: The Official UAE Government Portal (u.ae)

Overview per The Official UAE Government Portal (u.ae). Details and any amounts change over time — check the authority's website. We don't invent numbers.

What to know about your rights at work

  1. 1

Know that the law covers you

The provisions of the law apply to all businesses, employees and employers in the private sector. It applies to all employees working in the UAE, whether UAE nationals or expatriates. So if you hold a private-sector job here, you are inside its scope from day one.

    Documents:Employment contract
  2. 2

Check which law is in force

The current law became effective on 2 February 2022, replacing the previous Federal Law No. 8 of 1980. When you read older guides or contracts, make sure they reflect the law that is actually in force today.

  3. 3

Pick the work model that fits

The law introduces several new work models such as full-time, part-time, temporary and flexible. If a standard full-time role does not suit your situation, ask your employer which of these arrangements is available to you.

    Documents:Employment contract
  4. 4

    Rely on your core protections

The law prohibits forced labour and discrimination on the basis of gender, race, colour, sex, religion, national or social origin or disability. It defines the responsibilities of both parties in a balanced manner, safeguards their rights and obligations, and ensures a suitable working environment in line with applicable national legislation and international conventions ratified by the UAE.

  5. 5

    Know who to turn to

The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) is the competent authority responsible for regulating labour relations, enhancing productivity, and creating job opportunities in the private sector. If a workplace question or dispute goes beyond your employer, MoHRE is the body that regulates the employer-employee relationship.

  6. 6

Verify current details before you act

The labour law aims to ensure the efficiency of the UAE labour market, attract top talent and future skills, create an attractive business environment for employers, and define the rights and obligations of both parties in a balanced manner. Any specific fees, deadlines or figures are not shown here — confirm the current amounts on the authority's website before you rely on them.

Fees and timelines may change — verify with the official source.
