The classic is an evening tour: dunes at sunset, a desert camp, dinner, and entertainment. The differences come down to group size and location.

Camels in the dunes at sunset
most popular

Logo Classic EveningClassic Evening

Dune bashing in a Land Cruiser, sunset photos, a camel ride, buffet dinner, and a show at a shared camp. It's a well-oiled machine — but an energetic one. For a first visit, it does the job.

Al Marmoom Reserve instead of well-worn dunes: falconry, a campfire dinner, and oryx and gazelles along the route. No dune bashing — the desert is carefully preserved here, and that restraint is part of what makes it special.

no dinner or show

Logo Morning SafariMorning Safari

Dunes at dawn, sandboarding, camels — and you're back in the city by lunch. In summer, this is the only format with bearable temperatures.

Hot Air Balloons at Sunrise

An hour's flight over the dunes at sunrise — sometimes with a falcon on board. It's pricey, but the scale of the desert from up here is something else. Often paired with a breakfast at the camp.

Desert Without a Tour

own car

If you have a license and a rental car, the desert is yours — free of charge. Don't take a sedan into the dunes.

Love Lake
45 minutes from the city

Logo Al Qudra & Love LakeAl Qudra & Love Lake

Man-made heart-shaped lakes nestled among the dunes: flamingos, oryxes, and BBQ areas. Paved road all the way — any car can make it.

Hatta Dam
1.5 hours from Dubai

Dubai's enclave in the Hajar Mountains: a turquoise dam, kayaking, and hiking trails. In winter, it's the most underrated day trip from the city.

Honest Tips from Those Who’ve Been There

  • Don’t eat a heavy meal before dune bashing — 30 minutes of roller-coaster riding over sand can turn even the toughest stomachs. Children and pregnant women are not taken on this part of the tour.

  • In winter (December–February), desert temperatures after sunset drop to +12…+15°C — bring a warm layer, because the camps genuinely get cold in the evening.
  • Wear sneakers instead of sandals — the sand cools down by evening, but walking on the dunes in open footwear is uncomfortable.

Frequently asked questions

How Much Does a Desert Safari in Dubai Cost?
Reference information: confirm prices, ratings and schedules with the operator.
How does a “luxury safari” differ from a regular one, apart from the price?
Location and scale: luxury operators work within a protected nature reserve — no convoys of 40 jeeps, groups of 4–12 people, and dinner prepared right in front of you. Regular tours head to the well-worn Lahbab zone with camps hosting 300–500 guests. The dunes are the same — the atmosphere is not.
When Is the Best Time to Go, and What About Summer?
The ideal time is November–March: +25°C during the day, pleasantly cool in the evenings. Summer safaris do run, but midday temperatures in the dunes can reach +45°C — go for a sunrise morning tour or a late-departure evening trip. During Ramadan, programs run without entertainment shows or alcohol.
Can we go to the desert on our own, without a tour?
Yes — Al Qudra Lakes and Love Lake are both accessible by paved road and free to visit. Driving into the dunes in a rental crossover is another matter entirely: without experience and deflated tyres, a car can sink into the sand within minutes, and rental insurance typically does not cover off-road incidents.
Safari or Hatta — which one to choose for a free day?
A safari gives you the iconic dunes and a full evening of entertainment, while Hatta offers mountains, water, and an activity-packed day without any shows. In winter, with a car, you can do both: Hatta during the day and a safari on a separate evening.
