   Get your documents ready

   Before you apply, gather the papers banks most commonly ask for. Your salary certificate or employment letter is one of these, so request it from your employer or HR early. Proof of address may be needed in some cases.

   Submit your application

   You can open an account by either visiting a bank branch or applying through the bank's website or mobile application. If you prefer to stay online, the app route lets you upload your documents and send the application without going in person.

   Wait for approval and activation

   Once your application is approved, your bank account is activated, you will receive a debit card, and you can access online and mobile banking services. The current processing time is not fixed here — check your bank or the authority's website for the latest.

   Receive and use your IBAN

   From 2012, the use of International Bank Account Number (IBAN) is mandatory for all electronic payments and receipts within and outside the UAE (except for making payments through a credit card). Banks are required to inform their account holders of their unique IBAN, so watch for this after activation. Remember that you will have a distinct IBAN for each of the accounts you hold in the same or different banks.
