Know your rights under the law
The UAE guarantees people of determination the right to live with dignity. Provision is made under Federal Law No. 29 of 2006 Concerning the Rights of People with Disabilities (PDF, 500 KB), which protects those rights. Read the law before you apply for anything, so you know what you are entitled to.

Get the ID card for people of determination
The ID card for people of determination, issued by the Ministry of Community Empowerment, offers many facilities and benefits in the transport sector and others. Apply for it through the Ministry; it is often the key that unlocks the other services below.

Access core services
Support is broad. Services range from providing a medical card and rehabilitation to providing monthly social assistance; from providing jobs to translating documents into sign language and providing educational material in Braille. Ask the relevant authority which of these fit your situation. The current amounts and eligibility for monthly social assistance must be checked on the authority's website.

Use sign language translation
If you need documents or communication in sign language, the Zayed Authority for People of Determination offers a translation service in sign language. Contact them directly to arrange it.

Rely on accessible transport
Under Article 25 of the Federal Law No. 29 of 2006 concerning the Rights of Persons with Special Needs, roads, public transport, and land, sea and air transport must comply with technical standards that meet the needs of people of determination. Combined with your ID card benefits, this covers everyday mobility.

Know the protection against abuse
The UAE Cabinet approved a Policy for protecting People of Determination from Abuse, aiming to protect people with special needs from abuse while empowering them, their families and their co-workers to deal with cases of abuse. If you or someone you know is at risk, this policy is your ground to act.

In Dubai, reach the dedicated committee
A Committee is tasked with supervising all affairs concerning people of determination in Dubai, and implementing policies, plans and initiatives aimed at protecting their rights. For Dubai-specific questions, this is the body overseeing your interests.
