   Who a residence visa can be issued for

   According to recent changes, a residence visa can also be issued for 5 and 10 years, subject to certain conditions. Confirm the exact conditions that apply to your category on the authority's website.

   The medical fitness test

   A residence visa requires applicants who are 18 and above to undergo a medical test to prove that they are medically fit. Plan to complete this as part of your application.

   How a dependent's visa is tied to yours

   If you sponsor family, note that the expiry date of the dependent's residence visa will not exceed that of the sponsor. Keep your own visa current so theirs stays valid too.

   Renewing before it expires

   Renewing your residence visa: your sponsor must renew your residence visa before it expires. Don't leave it until the last day — start early to avoid any lapse.

   Grace period after cancellation or expiry

   UAE residents are granted longer flexible grace periods that reach up to 6 months (according to resident category) to stay in the country after the residence permit is cancelled or expired. The exact period depends on your category.

   Overstaying fees

   According to the new rules, visit, tourist and residence visa overstaying fees have standardised at AED 50 per day. Avoid overstaying by tracking your expiry date.

   If you've been outside the UAE a long time

   Entry permit for residents staying outside the UAE for over 6 months: UAE residents whose residence visa expired as a result of staying outside the country for more than six months for study, work or treatment can apply for a permit to enter the UAE.

   Cancelling your visa

   Normally, only the sponsor can cancel your residence visa. Coordinate with your sponsor if a cancellation is needed, for example when changing jobs.
