How to access food support for low-income families in the UAE

If money is tight and putting enough good food on the table has become a struggle, you are not on your own in the UAE. National and charitable initiatives work to give families in need access to sufficient, quality food, through meal distribution, essential food baskets, and the redistribution of surplus food. These efforts aim to do more than cover daily needs: they promote sustainability, cut food waste, strengthen social solidarity, and protect the dignity of the people they help. Here is how to understand what exists and how to tap into it.

What to know and how to get support

1
Understand what the programmes provide
Support comes in a few forms: distribution of ready food meals, provision of essential food baskets, and redistribution of surplus food to families in need. Knowing which type fits your situation helps you ask for the right thing.
2
Get to know the Ne'ma initiative
Ne'ma is the national Food Loss and Waste initiative. It aims to reduce food loss and waste, promote sustainable practices and social responsibility, and support food security in the UAE. Its benefits reach all segments of society, including low-income groups.
3
Use community refrigerators near you
As part of Ne'ma, community refrigerators are operated at strategic locations, providing food to eligible groups. Look for one in your area as an immediate, no-stigma way to pick up food.
4
Register with the CDA for ongoing help
A sustainable charitable endowment is being established to support low-income families, with proceeds dedicated to meeting the food needs of families registered with the CDA. Registration is the gateway to this longer-term support.

5
Learn about Saned food cards
Revenues from the endowment are used to fund AED 1,000 Saned cards for beneficiary families to purchase essential food items. The current amount and eligibility should be confirmed on the authority's website.
