Public transport in Dubai: metro, tram, buses and taxis

Getting around Dubai without a car is normal here. The city runs a metro, a tram in some districts, public buses and taxis, plus water taxis and ferries. This page walks through what exists, how the taxi booking works across the emirates, and where to check the current charges before you travel.

How to use public transport in Dubai

  1. 1

    Start with the metro

Metro service is available in Dubai city. For most newcomers it is the simplest way to cover long distances across the city, and it connects to other modes at interchange points.

  2. 2

Check whether the tram reaches you

Tram service is available in some parts of Dubai. It is considered the first type of tram service outside Europe that is powered by a ground-based electric supply system. Before planning a daily commute around it, confirm the tram actually serves your neighbourhood.

  3. 3

Use public buses for the gaps

Public buses fill in the routes the metro and tram don't cover. Read about public buses in the UAE on the official platform, and check timetables and stops for your own area rather than assuming a route exists.

  4. 4

Book a taxi — the number depends on the emirate

Taxi booking is organised per emirate. Sharjah, call on 600525252 or book online. Ajman, call on 80070 or book through the Route app. Ras Al Khaimah, book via the Careem app available for both iOS and Android platforms.

  5. 5

Expect booking charges — and verify the amount

Booking charges apply and differ from emirate to emirate, type of taxi booked and time of the day. The official quotes give no figure for these charges, so check the current amount on the authority's website (rta.ae) before you book.

  6. 6

    Remember the water routes

Water taxis and ferries are part of the same public transport picture. If you live or work near the water, check whether a marine route serves your commute alongside the metro and bus options.
