How the process works

   Know your two routes

   Citizens and expatriate residents can obtain a UAE driving licence after taking classes from private institutes and passing the tests conducted by local transport authorities. Separately, some expatriate residents can exchange their existing valid driving licence issued by their home country instead of starting from scratch.

   Check whether you can exchange your licence

   The exchange route is not open to everyone, so confirm your eligibility with the traffic department. Where you can exchange, the applicant must be at least 18 years old.

   Open your traffic file

   Whichever route applies to you, you begin by opening a traffic file. Bring the documents the department asks for. Note that the 'No objection' letter is only needed if your related traffic department requires it.

   Understand how long your licence lasts

   A new driving licence is valid for 1 year for those under 21, and for 2 years for those who are 21 or older. Keep your own expiry date in mind so you can plan the renewal ahead of time.

   Renew when the time comes

   Renewal of driving licences is available online in most of the emirates. Before you renew, you must settle your traffic fines, so clear any outstanding penalties first. For current amounts and any recent changes, check the authority's website.
