The RTA keeps a list of countries whose national licences can be swapped for a UAE licence without an exam (with a valid residence visa). If your country is listed, you take the simplified route.

If eligible — direct exchange

Apply at the RTA (online, RTA app or a service centre) with your documents and an eye test. After paying the fees the RTA issues your UAE licence.

If not eligible — training

Train at an accredited driving school and pass the RTA theory and road tests. The number of lessons depends on your driving experience.

After passing (or exchanging) the RTA issues your driving licence. An eye test is mandatory for all applicants.
