Driving in Dubai after moving from the UK: your licence, step by step

If you have just relocated from the United Kingdom, one of the first practical things you will want is the ability to drive here legally on your own licence. The good news is that some expatriate residents can exchange their existing valid driving licence issued by their home country, rather than starting from scratch. Below is the honest, official route — what it involves, who qualifies, and the paperwork to have ready.

How it works

  1. 1

    Know your two possible routes

Citizens and expatriate residents can obtain a UAE driving licence after taking classes from private institutes and passing the tests conducted by local transport authorities. However, some expatriate residents can exchange their existing valid driving licence issued by their home country — which usually saves the classes and tests. Confirm on the authority's website whether your UK licence qualifies for exchange.

  2. 2

Check the age condition for exchange

If you are exchanging a home-country licence, note that in this case the applicant must be at least 18 years old. If you do not meet that condition, plan for the classes-and-tests route instead.

  3. 3

    Open your traffic file

Before the licence itself, you open a traffic file. Have the required documents ready so nothing holds you up at the counter.

  4. 4

Understand how long your licence lasts

A new driving licence is valid for 1 year for those under 21, and for 2 years for those who are 21 or older. Keep note of your own validity so you renew on time.

  5. 5

    Renew when the time comes

Renewal of driving licences is available online in most of the emirates. One important condition: to renew your driving licence, you must settle your traffic fines first. Clear any outstanding fines, then complete the renewal.
