Retirement residence visa in Dubai: who qualifies and how to apply

If you have finished your working life and want to stay in Dubai without an employer or a company behind you, the retirement route is the one to look at. Two things decide whether the door is open: your work history and age, and the income you can prove. Everything below comes from what ICP and GDRFA Dubai publish themselves — where they don't state a number, we say so instead of guessing.

Official source: ICP (icp.gov.ae) / GDRFA Dubai (gdrfad.gov.ae)

Procedure per ICP (icp.gov.ae) / GDRFA Dubai (gdrfad.gov.ae). Fees and timelines change — check the authority's website. We don't invent numbers.

How the application works

  1. 1

Check the work history and age condition first

For a retiree to be eligible for the retirement visa, he/she must have worked for not less than 15 years inside or outside the UAE and be at least 55 years old at the time of retirement. Note that the years of work count wherever they were done — a career built entirely abroad is treated the same way as one built here.

  2. 2

Confirm your income meets the Dubai threshold

To apply for a visa from Dubai, the annual fixed income must not be less than AED 240,000 (two hundred forty thousand) or its equivalent in foreign currencies, whether the income source is inside or outside the country. A pension paid in another currency is acceptable — what matters is that the amount is fixed, annual and can be evidenced.

  3. 3

    Gather the supporting paperwork

The required document set is published by the authority handling your file and is updated from time to time. Rather than list items that may be out of date by the time you read this, check the current checklist on icp.gov.ae or gdrfad.gov.ae before you start collecting anything.

  4. 4

    Submit the application

Applications from Dubai go through GDRFA Dubai; ICP handles the federal channel. Use the official portal or an approved service point, and keep the reference number you receive — it is how you follow the file afterwards.

  5. 5

Pay the fees and complete the medical and Emirates ID steps

Fees, processing times and the sequence of medical testing and biometrics are set by the authority and change periodically. The current amounts and timelines must be checked on icp.gov.ae or gdrfad.gov.ae — we do not quote figures the authority has not published here.

  6. 6

    Track renewal conditions

The income and eligibility conditions are checked again when the visa is renewed, so keep your proof of annual fixed income current. Renewal periods and any updated requirements are published by the authority; confirm them there ahead of expiry.
