   Know who oversees your emirate

   In Dubai, the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) is responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education. In Abu Dhabi, the Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK) supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools. Start with the authority for the emirate you'll live in.

   Match the curriculum to your child

   Dubai's private schools offer British, American, Indian and other curricula, so you can keep continuity with a previous school system or choose a new path. Shortlist by curriculum first, then by location and community fit.

   Read the inspection reports before you decide

   KHDA began annual school inspections in the academic year 2008–2009 through the Dubai School Inspection Bureau. The authority issues annual inspection reports that give a comprehensive review of Dubai's private school performance in general, and of each school in particular. Use them to compare schools honestly.

   Confirm the school is registered

   In Abu Dhabi, since September 2008, all private schools are required to register with ADEK. Whichever emirate you're in, verify the school's standing with the relevant authority before paying anything.

   Check tuition fees at the source

   MOE reviews applications from private schools to amend tuition fees, according to precise regulations that take into account the quality of educational services and the financial capacity of parents. Fee amounts aren't fixed here — confirm the current tuition and any changes on the authority's website and directly with the school.

   Sort out certificate equivalency and attestation

   If your child arrives with certificates from abroad or moves between systems, MOE undertakes equivalency of academic certificates issued by private schools in accordance with approved laws and regulations, ensuring their official recognition nationally and internationally. Handle this early so enrolment isn't held up.
