Understanding your rights and where to check them
- 1
Know the pillars the Constitution sets out
Article 14 of the Constitution provides that equality, social justice, safety, security and equal opportunities for all citizens shall be the pillars of the society. The same principle is carried in Article 14 of the Constitution. These are not slogans — they are the foundation the legal system is built to protect.

Read further where justice and safety are spelled out
For more provision of justice and safety in the UAE's Constitution, refer to Articles 16, 19, 21, 25 to 36, 40 and 41. If you want the full wording, go to the source rather than a summary, and check the authority's website for the current text.

Rely on a written, transparent system of laws
The UAE has adopted a codified system of laws, which is transparent and protects the rights of all individuals. In practice this means the rules that apply to you are published and set down in writing, not left to guesswork — so you can look them up and act with confidence.
- 4
Trust the safeguard against retroactive punishment
No punishment shall be imposed for any act of commission or act of omission, which was completed before the issue of the law providing for such punishment. In other words, you cannot be punished under a law that did not yet exist when the act took place — a core protection for everyone living here.
- 5
Confirm anything specific with the authority
Rules, procedures and any fees or waiting periods are updated over time. Before you rely on a figure or a step, check the current position directly with Dubai Courts or the Ministry of Justice. When we do not have a verified number, we say so honestly rather than guess.
