Family reconciliation in Dubai: how the Dubai Courts service works

If a family dispute is heading toward a courtroom — between spouses, between parents and children, or among wider kin — Dubai Courts offers a reconciliation route first. The service exists so families can turn to family guidance and try to settle the matter before it reaches the courts. It treats the family as the first building block for a cohesive and interconnected society, and it changes how family guidance is delivered so the parties can resolve disputes in innovative ways. Below is what the official description actually says, and where to go for each step.

Step by step

  1. 1

Understand what the service is for

Dubai Courts provides family reconciliation services so families can resort to family guidance and work to resolve family disputes between children, parents, kin and spouses, before reaching the courts. If your dispute falls into one of those relationships, this is the door to start with.

  2. 2

Know what the guidance aims to achieve

The service seeks to strengthen family ties through individual and collective guidance to all family members, and to help them confront family problems that may lead to the dispersal of children. Solutions are sought in line with Islamic values and Emirati culture. Guidance may be given to you individually or to the family as a group.

  3. 3

Attend the sessions at the Centre

The parties meet with a family counsellor at the Centre. The official page does not publish a session count, a waiting period or a fee for this service — check the current details on the Dubai Courts website before you plan around a date.

  4. 4

Record the agreement if you reach one

If the parties reach an agreement before the Centre, the settlement is recorded in an official report signed by the parties and the family counsellor. That signed report is the outcome document of the process — keep your copy.

  5. 5

Use counselling support alongside the process

The Community Development Authority provides appropriate counselling to individuals in the family and with regard to marital problems. It is a separate body from the courts and can be approached for personal or marital counselling support.

  6. 6

Check the right emirate if you are not in Dubai

The equivalent services sit with different authorities elsewhere: Apply for family guidance — Family Guidance Department in Abu Dhabi Judicial Department; Family and family cases services — Ras Al Khaimah Courts; Solving Family Issues — Government of Ajman. Go to the authority for the emirate where your case belongs.
