MBZUAI researchers developed a benchmark to test how well AI understands Arab culture and 13 regional dialects. This project aims to bridge the gap between standard Arabic and everyday speech used by locals.

Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence is refining AI systems to grasp Arab culture and its complex dialects.

The team introduced the first benchmark measuring AI capabilities across 13 national dialects. It revealed a gap where models understand what Arabs say but fail to speak like them in daily life.

Lead researchers Fajri Koto and Muhammad Dehan stated that closing this gap is crucial for the next stage of Arabic-language AI development.
