Abu Dhabi Police has issued a warning to motorists about a costly mistake many make: leaving their vehicles running without supervision. The penalty is Dh500. The rule applies whenever you step away from your car—whether at a petrol station, while shopping, withdrawing cash from an ATM, or during prayers.
The risks are real. An idling, unattended vehicle is an easy target for theft. Heat and mechanical faults can also trigger fires, particularly in the Middle Eastern climate. But the most serious concern is leaving children—especially infants—inside running vehicles. Even with air conditioning on, the temperature inside can become dangerous rapidly.
The solution is straightforward: switch off the engine, remove the key, lock the doors, and then go about your business. This applies whether your car is at home or in a public space.
