Combatting communicable diseases in Dubai: what the law asks of you

What the law expects you to do

   Know that reporting is mandatory

   Under the law, communicable diseases must be reported. This is a legal duty, not a formality — the law applies to every person in the UAE and to all the diseases listed in its appendix, including COVID-19.

   If you are a medical professional, report on time

   Doctors, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and medical professionals in both the government and the private sector must report within 24 hours about any person suffering from, or who has died of, a communicable disease.

   If you had contact with an infected person, report it

   Adults who came in contact with a person infected or suspected to be infected with a communicable disease must also report the incident immediately to the nearest health authority in the country.

   Do not knowingly expose others

   Any person who knows that he suffers from a communicable disease and yet intentionally indulges in a behaviour that exposes others to transmission is liable by law.

   Send notifications to the right authority

   Private sector medical facilities in Dubai submit notification about any infectious disease to the Dubai Health Authority. In Abu Dhabi, health care providers can report through the Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre.

6. 6

   If you need a work permit or residence visa, get screened

   In order to be able to obtain a work permit or a residence visa, foreign nationals need to be free of all forms of communicable diseases such as HIV, tuberculosis, viral hepatitis and syphilis. Check the current screening steps and any charges on the authority's website — we don't quote figures we can't confirm.
