Procedure per KHDA — Knowledge and Human Development Authority (khda.gov.ae) / MOE (moe.gov.ae). Fees and timelines change — check the authority's website. We don't invent numbers.
How to choose, step by step
- 1
Start with the authority, not the brochure
Before you fall for a nice building, remember who watches over it. KHDA inspects private schools and is responsible for the quality of private education across Dubai. Its scope extends to all schools in the emirate. Use the authority's website as your reference point, and treat glossy marketing as secondary to what the regulator actually reports.
- 2
Understand what the school must teach
Private schools in Dubai are not managed directly by the authority and are not obliged to follow a specific curriculum, beyond Arabic language, social studies, and Islamic studies. So expect real variety in teaching approach between schools, while those core subjects remain common ground. Ask each nursery or kindergarten how it handles them.
- 3
Check that it follows the ministry's rules
Freedom on curriculum does not mean a free-for-all. Schools must adhere to the ministry's general regulations. When you visit, ask the school to confirm how it meets those requirements, and look for that alignment rather than taking it on trust.

Know who oversees the school
In the emirates of Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Sharjah, oversight of schools is shared between the ministry and the respective local educational authority. In practice, for Dubai that means both the ministry and KHDA. Knowing this tells you exactly where to look for inspection information and where to raise a concern.
- 5
Match the school to your child and your family
Once the regulatory basics check out, weigh the everyday things: the feel of the classrooms, how staff talk about children's happiness and wellbeing, the daily routine, and the commute from home. KHDA frames the sector around wellbeing, so let that be part of your judgement too, not just academics.
- 6
Confirm current fees and timelines at the source
Fees, application windows and required paperwork differ from school to school and change over time. We will not quote a figure we cannot stand behind. Ask each school directly and cross-check the current amounts and dates on the authority's website before you commit.
