How waste management works in Dubai

Know how waste is classified
In the emirate of Dubai, waste is classified as follows: general waste, green/horticultural waste, construction and demolition waste, liquid waste and hazardous waste. Knowing which category your waste falls into tells you which rules and which service apply to it.

Understand who runs the system
Dubai Municipality has a Waste Management Department that implements the Dubai Integrated Waste Management Strategy. If you have a question about collection or disposal in Dubai, the Municipality's Waste Management Department is the body responsible.

Follow the technical guidelines for disposal
For how waste and sewerage must be handled, refer to the Waste and sewerage agency technical guidelines published by Dubai Municipality. These set out the correct way to dispose of each category rather than leaving it to guesswork.

Check the current fees and fines
Fees and fines for waste disposal in the emirate of Dubai are set out in Executive Council Resolution No. 58 of 2017. We do not quote amounts here - the current fees and fines must be checked on the authority's website, because they can change.

Handle hazardous waste under the law
Federal Law No. 12 of 2018 on Integrated Waste Management outlines the requirements for sound management of hazardous waste, including its segregation, treatment and reduction under the supervision of the concerned authority. Hazardous waste is never mixed with general waste - it must be separated and handled as the law requires.

Know how companies are monitored
Dubai Municipality introduced the smart tool 'Rasid', a smart waste management system, to monitor and regulate registered waste management companies. The system also provides data and reports to support better waste management and decision-making, so if you deal with a registered company it is being watched through Rasid.
