Solar Energy in Dubai: A Resident's How-To Guide

The UAE has invested heavily in solar power, and Dubai sits at the centre of that shift. If you live here and want to understand how solar fits into the grid — or how you might benefit from it — this guide walks you through the essentials and points you to DEWA, the authority that runs Dubai's electricity and water. We stick to what DEWA states publicly and tell you honestly where you need to confirm the current details yourself.

Official source: DEWA — Dubai Electricity & Water Authority (dewa.gov.ae)

Information per DEWA — Dubai Electricity & Water Authority (dewa.gov.ae). Fees, capacities and timelines change — check the authority's website. We don't invent numbers.

How to get to grips with solar energy as a Dubai resident

  1. 1

Understand the flagship solar plants near you

The region's solar footprint is large. The Al Dhafra Solar PV plant was inaugurated in November 2023 and spans more than 20 square kilometres of desert, using almost 4 million solar panels that deploy innovative bi-facial technology. Knowing the scale helps you see why solar is central to the grid you rely on.

  2. 2

Learn how concentrated solar power works here

Not all solar is the same. The Shams Solar Power Plant is a 100-megawatt (MW) concentrated solar power (CSP) plant located in the Western Region of Abu Dhabi. It was commissioned in 2013, with an aim to help the United Arab Emirates diversify its energy mix.

  3. 3

See the real-world output of a working plant

Quick facts about Shams show what a single plant delivers: it supplies electricity to 20,000+ households, its installed capacity is 100MW, it displaces about 175,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year, it generates energy through 768 parabolic trough collectors, and it covers an area of 2.5 square kilometres.

  4. 4

Connect solar to Dubai's climate goals

The solar project and solar park, when completed, are expected to slash carbon emissions in Dubai by more than 6.5 million tonnes of harmful carbon dioxide, helping Dubai and the UAE meet their commitment to the Paris Agreement to keep global warming temperature increases below 2 degrees Celsius this century.

  5. 5

    Know the regional pioneers

Solar in the UAE has deep roots. The Masdar City 10MW Solar Photovoltaic Plant was the first grid-connected renewable energy project in the UAE and the largest of its kind in the Middle East when inaugurated in 2009.

  6. 6

Check current programmes and any home-solar rules with DEWA

If you want to install panels on a home or villa, or take part in a rooftop solar scheme, the terms, eligibility and any charges are set by the authority and can change. Do not rely on figures from elsewhere — confirm the current requirements and application steps directly on the DEWA website before you commit.
