Your step-by-step checklist
- 1
Register the birth on time
Residents have a maximum period of 30 days to register their child's birth in the UAE. Start this early — the registration is what unlocks every document that follows, so treat the deadline as your first priority.
Documents:Birth notification - 2
Get the birth certificate
For babies born in private hospitals, parents apply to the Ministry of Health and Prevention, or to the health authority in their emirate of residence, for a birth certificate by presenting the birth notification. The hospital issues the notification; you exchange it for the official certificate.

Attest the birth certificate
All expatriates must get birth certificates attested by the Ministry of Health and Prevention and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Without both attestations, the certificate won't be accepted for the passport and visa steps that come next.

Arrange all the formal documents
Residents have 120 days from the birth of their child to arrange the formal documents, which include birth certificates, passports, Emirates ID and visas of their newborn babies. Line these up together rather than one at a time — they depend on each other and the clock is shared.

Add your baby to the family file at ICP
After you get the birth certificate, visit the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs & Port Security (ICP) with the documents to add the newborn to the family data. This links your child to your own resident record.
Documents:Birth certificateParents' IDs - 6
Finalise the residence visa without delay
Sponsor a residency visa for your child the same way you would for any dependant. If the residence visa is not finalised within 120 days, a daily fee is charged for each day over the 120-day period, and the baby will not be allowed to exit the country until it's resolved. The exact daily amount should be confirmed on the authority's website. You can read the full details on sponsoring a residency visa for your children in the UAE on the official portal.
